Theme of The Breadwinner
Belonging
At the beginning of the book she felt like she didn't belong anywhere, she had no meaning. A quote from the book that shows this is:
'Father had his books, Maryam played with Ali, Nooria had a Mother, but Parvana didn't have anybody.'
She started working for the family. She made money and fed them and became the breadwinner of the family. Doing these things gave her the feeling she was doing something and belonged. A quote from the end of the book that shows this is:
"Am I traveling as your son or daughter" Pervana asked Father. "You decide," he said. "Either way you will be my little Malali."
In the beginning of the book her father only had his books, and she had no one. At the end of the book her father had her, and she had her father.
