Plot of The Breadwinner
Parvana is a eleven year old girl living in a one room apartment with her family. Her father works at the marketplace in Kabul. Parvana's dad sells clothing, house items, and dishes. He also reads and writes letters in Pashtu and Dari because a lot of Afghans do not know how to read and write.
The Taliban found out that Parvana's dad went to a English university. The Taliban arrested Parvana's dad for doing this . They arrested him while he was eating dinner with his family. They did this in a continuous series of violence. Then they realized after there father was gone they had no one to earn money for the family and there mother was very sad.
In Afghanistan they do not allow woman outside. With their father gone there is no one to earn money for the family. They now have to figure out how to earn money. They decide to shave off Parvana's hair, so she looks like a boy, in order to earn money for the family. She will do the same thing as her father. She will sell what they have left from the bombings and read and write letters in Pashtu and Dari. Before in the marketplace when she had not shaved her hair yet she was running from the Taliban attempting to buy some bread when she ran into Mrs. Weera one of the people who worked with her mother in the Afghans women union. After seeing how sad Parvana's mom was she decided to move in with them. Mrs. Weera's only family member is her granddaughter. After moving in they decided they would write a magazine about what is happening in Afghanistan.
After working in the marketplace for a while Parvana discovered that little gifts were being dropped from a window above her. All the windows in Afghanistan must be painted black so she didn't see who it was. Anyways she decided to call this person the window women.
While working in the marketplace Parvana found out that Shauzia was working there. Shauzia is a person from Parvana's school. After meeting Shauzia they became friends. Parvana formed a close relationship with Shauzia. They decided to quit their old job and temporarily become bone diggers until they had enough money to buy treys so they could sell goods in the marketplace.
Nooria has been acceepted to college and she has announced that she will to a man she does not know. The man she will marry lives in Mazar-E-Shareef , which is far from Kabul. At first Parvana was upset that her sister had to leave but she learned to accept the fact that her sister was leaving.
One day after work Parvana meets a girl named Homa. Homa was a runaway from Mazar-E-Shareef . Homa said that the Taliban had just taken over the country. The Taliban went door to door killing and shooting people including Homa's brother and father who were shot and killed. Homa managed to escape in the back of a pick up truck which took her to Kabul. After hearing this Parvana starts worrying about her family going to Mazar-E-Shareef.
After a couple days of days Parvana's father comes back home with two men. Parvana hugs her father and asks why those two men are there. He said they helped him get back from jail because he was to weak to do it himself. Parvana thanks the two men. Parvana tells her father that Nooria and her Mother went to Mazar-E-Shareef, and about what chaos is happening there. They decide to go Mazar-E-Shareef to get them. Shauzia also decides to go to Pakistan with some Nomads. Shauzia also decides they will meet on top of the Eiffel tower in twenty years from now on the first day of spring.
